As part of the Pittsburgh Pirates design team, I created assets for promotions and events that aligned with each season’s brand identity. While most designs stayed on brand for consistency, specialty items offered room for creative exploration. For the Andy Van Slyke Bobblehead, I proposed an off-brand design that celebrated his legacy as a Pirates alumni and stood apart from the season’s visuals.
The design concept celebrates the iconic era of Andy Van Slyke’s career with the Pittsburgh Pirates. I created bobblehead packaging and web advertisements that mirror the look and feel of the 90s Pirates jerseys, incorporating the signature jersey script for typography and the classic team colors to evoke the style of that era. The project honors Van Slyke’s impact on the Pirates during their peak years, offering fans a vibrant, retro-inspired tribute to his iconic career from 1987 to 1994.
We promoted the bobblehead through a comprehensive marketing strategy, utilizing pirates.com, email campaigns, social media platforms, and advertisements in the handbills at every homestand to maximize visibility and engagement.
The jersey design was the first idea I executed, and the team immediately agreed it was the right direction. As a designer, it is rare to land on the final solution with the first concept. Exploring multiple directions is always valuable, but sometimes you know right away you have found the one.
